If there’s one thing in life that’s beyond irksome, it is foolish people who domineer a topic shrouded in mystery, and through brute force and arrogance they make enough of a performance as to fascinate on-lookers who succumb to the display as though the loud, annoying people are spouting their words with a sense of knowing, a gnosis, of what they speak. Unfortunately their mouths are flapping and their style of bombast is merely spectacle, yet they are taken as authority figures! Thelema is full of them, though some aren’t loud, but are rather the opposite which can be just as disastrous, they present themselves as coy and intellectual, yet have no true understanding of what they speak. (Okay, okay, you’re probably thinking I should turn my finger around and stop speaking about others, and I am going to, I just wanted to start this article series off with a little oomph!)
I had it floating in my mind for a while, and I’m finally going to commit to the action, I will Kill Thelema! Alright, while that is a drastic way to word it, and I obviously don’t intend to go after the structure or established construct that presents itself as “Thelema”, what I am going to do is fully dissect the tradition so that if one is ensnared or caught up in it, they can come here and get out of it in a jiffy!
I’ve been studying Thelema for many years, and practicing it (though, what I believe is the truthful expression of it, which is the exact same as practicing Zen, which is why I’ve dabbled in presenting a few Zen ideas as of late in the articles I was doing as I was planning on moving over entirely to write about the clearly superior tradition given that it’s not bogged down by so much insipidness and stupidity!). I tried for years to blend into the Thelemic crowd, to try and get mutual grounds of understanding developed, to get people to look at the writing for what it is, to get them to understand magnetism and hypnosis, for that is what the work points to, and to plead with those who could cause ripples and shakes into the larger community to move Thelema towards the idea of manifesting Thelemic Sleep Temples (reinvigorating Thelema by bringing back Sleep Temples which would be open meditation centers providing free hypnotherapy in the form of Past-Life Regression). As I’ve not met a single voice of support beyond a few who agree in quiet, in public, I’ve met only outrage and upset from people clinging to their dogmas and ignorance.
So the solution? I present the solution to the 93 current and Thelema in something called Boulema, which completely trumps it! So let’s explore it a little, shall we?
Boulema’s definition – Will, Counsel, Purpose.
Biblical scholar W E Vine wrote on Boulema, “Man is able to resist the will, the thelema, of God, but whatever takes place God’s determinate counsel, boulema, is never prevented from fulfillment. Thelema, when used of God, signifies a gracious design (cp. Ro 2:18; 12:2; 15:32); the similar word boulema denotes a determined resolve (see Ro 9:19). To do the will of God, then, is to yield ourselves to the accomplishment of His designs for us by obeying Him in all that He has revealed to faith, cp. Ro 1:17; He 11:3. But since neither the desire, nor the power, to do the will of God, dwells naturally in the believer, God works in Him “both to will and to work of His good pleasure,” Php 2:13, cp. He 13:21 and 1Co 12:6. This, however, does not relieve the believer of his responsibility, for he is to “understand what the will of the Lord is,” Ep 5:17, and understanding it, he is to do it from the heart, Ep 6:6.”
That this introduces “counsel” is rather neat given the main attainment of “intuitive heart-mind” in Thelema is known as “Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel”. The HGA resides in Binah, conceptually, and Binah is Understanding in Qabalah, the heart is Tipharet, and the path connecting Binah to Tipharet in Thelemic Qabalah is the path of the Lovers/Brothers. That path is also assigned to the Hebrew letter zayin which means “sword”, and the card as per Crowley in the Book of Thoth states that the “key is that the Card represents the Creation of the World”. Crowley’s Thelema announced that woman was now “girt with the sword” and moved to truly empower women by acknowleding the non-dual attainment is inherent in both (whereas religion often put women in a diminished role, or viewed them as lesser). We’ll explore Thelemic Qabalah in further depth, though we’ve looked at these cards and paths in previous articles which you may want to check out.
To get back on topic and without getting sidetracked in a detour, anyone familiar to Crowley’s Thelema knows it is fundamentally about finding one’s Pure (or true) Will (which is God’s Will, as Crowley wrote “And since the will is but the dynamic aspect of the self, and since two different selves could not possess identical wills; then, if thy will be God’s will, Thou art That.”), however as that calling or intuition can be ignored or even turned from, this means that the Law of Thelema is corruptible, which we can both confirm, and then remedy with Crowley’s love, Gematria!
Boulema Gematria Magic:
Now Crowley gave Thelema its “magic”-vibe by drawing upon the Greek Gematria where 93 is the value of Thelema and Agape (Will and Love). Boulema means Will too, and its value is 551, and Filia shares the same value (both words appearing in the Bible), and Filia of course means Love too!
Making this a much more magical and powerful number is some of the fun that can be had with it! We’ll look at that shortly, but first need to look at how Thelema is corruptible as brought up above. Taking a look at the writing of Irenaeus (130 AD. – 202 AD.) specifically his Against Heresies where he explained that 93 was corruptible and material (now that surely isn’t the good basis for a lasting tradition, is it?): “[…] material substances “on the left hand,” and maintaining that those things which are thus on the left hand of necessity fall into corruption, while they also affirm that the Saviour came to the lost sheep, in order to transfer it to the right hand, that is, to the ninety and nine sheep which were in safety, and perished not, but continued within the fold, yet were of the left hand, it follows that they must acknowledge that the enjoyment of rest did not imply salvation. And that which has not in like manner the same number, they will be compelled to acknowledge as belonging to the left hand, that is, to corruption. This Greek word Agape (love), then, according to the letters of the Greeks, by means of which reckoning is carried on among them, having a numerical value of ninety-three, is in like manner assigned to the place of rest on the left hand. Aletheia (truth), too, having in like manner, according to the principle indicated above, a numerical value of sixty-four, exists among material substances. And thus, in fine, they will be compelled to acknowledge that all those sacred names which do not reach a numerical value of one hundred, but only contain the numbers summed by the left hand, are corruptible and material.”
Boulema being 551, and meaning Will and Love can be made even more interesting by adding the values of 551 + 93, which is 644. Now 644 is significant as it is the value of a word that appears in the bible, and that is ‘Emmanuel’ (which happens to be the name prophesied of Jesus – (Matthew 1:22–23: “a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel). Making this more interesting, would be that Boulema is in places considered “God’s Plan”, whereas Thelema is “God’s Will”, so that equation (93+551=644) could alternately be looked upon as God’s Will + God’s Plan = “God With Us”. Emmanuel being in Hebrew עִמָּנוּאֵל meaning, “God with us”. Adding another layer of ‘hmm’ to this, is that Filia (love) is etymologically derived from the Latin fīlius which means “son”.
Another interesting element of 551 is breaking it down to 5+5+1, which is 11, which Crowley says in numerous places is the number of Magick, such as the Book of the Law which states: “I am The Empress & the Hierophant. Thus eleven, as my bride is eleven,” and “My number is 11, as all their numbers who are of us. The Five Pointed Star, with a Circle in the Middle, & the circle is Red. My colour is black to the blind, but the blue & gold are seen of the seeing. Also I have a secret glory for them that love me.”
Sharing a value of 551 are the following words which appear in the Bible, ενηργειτο – work, διετριβον – abide, πραξετε – do, τιμας – honour, γυμνην – naked, γενησομενον – be, αποκτεινει – kill (each of which can have a pretty good Thelemic meditation, for example:
Work – Great Work, and Karma (word which translates to ‘work/deeds’)
Abide – abiding in the Unborn,
Do – True Will, Doing non-doing (Wu Wei)
Naked – dattai busshō (脱體佛性): Or “the fully exposed buddha nature.” – “to reveal all”, “the very thing itself,” “the ‘naked’ thing”,
Kill – Crowley in Liber B Vel Magi, “…the art and craft of the Magus is but glamour. How shall He destroy Himself?”
While this was a little bit of a tasting, we’ll move beyond this in Part 2 and look at Boulema further in-depth, and explore the non-dual attainment in Thelema which we’ve touched upon in previous articles such as The Ipsissimus Knows Nothing.
