If there’s one thing that hinders Thelema from spreading or being properly recognized it is the lack of understanding of it. Not only misunderstandings, but also incorrect perceptions which can be promulgated, as there’s an absent council or ‘authoritative’ voice of the Thelemic community. Many detractors of the New Aeon point at Crowley and speak down of him, declaring him an egomaniac, etc. while completely ignoring the body of his work, the beauty of it, the results of it, and/or the intention with which he had done his magick, er… actions.
There are a number of prominent voices out there on the Thelemic Front which look to correct the perceptions of Crowley’s work and look to lift Thelema so that it could be easily accepted en masse. (We’re not looking at an issue of acceptance, but moreso an issue of understanding). Despite their efforts I feel they are outweighed by many a people who have falsely claimed themselves to be Thelemites and have clung to it as a sense of identity despite not knowing much of it. On the other hand, you have those who tie themselves into organizations and promote Thelema despite sending out mixed messages as to what it even is. This latter issue arising in my opinion when people speak of ‘initiations’ and ranks.
“They muddy the water, to make it seem deep.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
In my article I wrote titled ‘HGA, Zarathustra, Archytas, and Hypnosis’ I was trying to convey simple information to give ‘weight’ to the symbols in Thelema as to make the ‘Knowledge and Conversation’ experience something tangable. I’ve seen far too many Thelemic voices stating that its undefinable, or making a joke of the concept, making note that Crowley intentionally chose the phrase so that it is not adopted immediately without scrutiny by those entertaining the thoughts.
It’s known as Scientific Illuminism, it’s known as Naturalistic Occultism and as Crowley once called it “Pyrrho-Zoroastrianism” (skeptical Zoroastrinism). They are the names of the game!
Zarathustra is Avestan for the English Zoroaster. Zoroastrianism is the earliest form of Monotheistic religion (the Onion recently did a piece about how the Judaeo-Christian God ‘admits he stole the idea of the Messiah from Zorostrianism‘). Zorostrianism establishes the very simple story of good vs evil, creation vs destruction. Ahura Mazda is the creative spirit (the God of Wisdom), and there’s an always angry evil destructive spirit in Angra Mainyu. It is in Zoroastrianism where the concept of the Holy Guardian Angel comes from (which is known in Avestan as the Fravashi). The Fravashi is the pre-existing spirit of a manifest person and/or is an unconscious element or Genius of an individual which is either living, dead, or yet unborn.
Zoroaster, the Greek form of the name Zarathustra is postulated to be based on a phonetic transliteration or semantic substitution of Avestan zaraϑ- with the Greek zōros (meaning “undiluted”) and the Avestan -uštra with astron (meaning “star”). Of course Thelema’s holy book states “Every man and every woman is a star”. (So it established a religious view where men and women are equal and are able to pursue their own dreams and ambitions). The creative force is expression and love, the destructive force is oppression.
In the Thelemic Saint Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra, Zarathustra is a prophet; an awakened one; a child; one of the “Higher People”. Higher People (Creating Ones) in Thus Spake Zarathustra are pregnant with their own child, and because of this they have the foresight and foreseeing of the pregnant; that is, they see that which no other eyes see. (They draw from dreams and their imagination which they bring to manifest in reality). Nietzsche instructs that one’s love should be with their “child”, and that they should let no false values be imposed upon by others.
Aiwass, Crowley’s Holy Guardian Angel which dictated the Book of the Law announced itself as the minister of Hoor-paar-kraat, so Aiwass is the Lord of Silence. Harpocrates representing the ‘Babe in the Egg of Blue’. This all metaphorically of course painting a picture of its position in Binah on the Tree of Life – the sphere which carries the attributions of Silence and the Intuition. Or, if you’ve read my articles before, taking the Polyphony of Thought; we have thinking in words which I place in Chokmah, while thought which hasn’t yet developed into words and appears as impressions/images is attributed to Binah, as it’s also known as ‘Feeling Thought’ and as well known as ‘Thought in Statu Nascendi’. A Nascent State means the state of being born or just emerging.
In Egyptian lore Osiris becomes true of voice through Thoth. Thoth of course is the god of Wisdom, and rests at the top of the creative force in Qabalah in Chokmah. (The Ibis bird furthers this symbolism, as in early Egypt Thoth was seen as the baboon, but later was replaced with the head of the Ibis to represent eternity, and for their ability to stand for great lengths on one leg). Qabalistically of course, standing on one leg would be standing on the Merciful pillar, the creative force, and Wisdom represents again Chokmah. What does this mean? It means that science, math, writing, expression is elevated to be worshiped and as tools of our divine expression.
“With thy right Eye create all for thyself, with the left accept all that be created otherwise” – Aleister Crowley, The Book of Thoth.
The Early Egyptians believed a part of the soul exists known as the Akhu (or the Khu – meaning star). The Khu was reserved for those who were deserving of Maat Kheru (which means one who is justified and true of voice). In my article mentioned above, I highlighted how Crowley’s “spiritual” journey was the process of becoming true of voice. (The purpose of the Great Work is to become an undiluted star).
Now, since that’s all pretty easy to understand, let’s dive into some fun talk. Gematria! The following are for Simple (English) Gematria values.
The name of God “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh” (I am that I am) has a value of 153.
Zarathustra (which again in Greek has the meaning “Undiluted Star”) has a value of 153.
Also sharing 153 is: Quetzalcoatl, Michael the Archangel, masturbation, the water of life, hidden witness, heavenly formed, free your mind, in the holy place, made them one flesh, the number of God, the discovery, the master faith, the female hidden one, hearing spirit, four elements, the unified earth, symbolical fish, sacred lessons, the Christians, fountain of life, the true light, test my wine, spiritual man, English words, the pure word, manifesteth seed, true religion, creator of earth, this instant, sign of wisdom, the paradise of god, and purpose plan.
153, or 9. 9 being the number of The Foundation Yesod. Coincidence? Yes. Interesting to meditate upon? You bet.
